My Cup Runneth Over, on a Tuesday

We usually hear Psalm 23 at funerals, which is fitting. But it was written for a Tuesday too. It was written for the kind of day when the bills are on the table and the news is bad and you are still expected to make dinner.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.Psalm 23:5

Look at where the table is set: “in the presence of mine enemies.” David does not say the trouble has gone away. The enemies are still standing right there, and the Lord sets the table anyway. The overflow happens while the problem is in the room.

Gratitude is not pretending

Being thankful does not mean saying everything is fine. It means telling the truth about the whole table: the hard things and the good things at the same time. The Psalms do this constantly. They complain and they sing, sometimes in the same breath.

A small practice

Before bed tonight, try this. Name one hard thing out loud to God, plainly, without dressing it up. Then name three good things from today. Keep them small and specific. Not “my family,” but the way someone laughed at dinner. Not “my health,” but that your knees got you up the stairs.

Do that for a week and see what happens. The hard thing will probably still be there. But you may notice that the cup has been fuller than you thought.
